Providers and Children’s Chiefs Pre-Conference

Tuesday, May 12

2:00 – 5:30 pm · Building Evidence-Based Systems in Children’s Mental Health: An Overview

Bruce Chorpita, Professor of Psychology at UCLA and the University of Hawaii, author, and trainer, will start with an overview of the need for evidence-based services to be integrated on a common, updatable platform to assist with system adoption of new practices. This will be followed by the detailing of various strategies for how to define evidence and howto get the most out of the evidence base. The common elements of evidence-based practices will be reviewed for the majormental health areas, and a model will be proposed to integrate multiple sources of evidence at once to inform system and clinical decision-making.

Wednesday, May 13

9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. · Building Evidence-Based Systems in Children’s MH: Illustrations and Evidence

Mr. Chorpita’s second session will delve into details on the use of specific decision support tools designed to make the model work in context. Finally, evidence of the effectiveness of these approaches will be outlined.

Family / Caregivers Pre-Conference

Tuesday, May 12

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 pm · Reception & Orientation for New Family Members

The United Advocates for Children and Families, Family Partnership Council of California, San Diego Roundtable andParent’s Anonymous will host a reception for family members who are new to CMHACY. Seasoned Family members willshare their experience on how to get the most out of CMHACY and how to re-engage their local communities with this knowledge.

The host organizations will provide an update on services and mental health issues in the coming year and provide an orientation on CHMACY, to include the history of the conference, workshops, Board members and past accomplishments. Food and beverages will be served.

6:30 p.m. – 8:30 pm · UACF Annual Membership Meeting

United Advocates for Children and Families (UACF) launched the new Institute for Family and Youth Leadership in 2009. All CMHACY attendees are encouraged to attend this meeting and learn how the Institute will provide transformation tools to families and youth and other UACF initiatives. Membership is free!

Special Guest Speaker: David N. Hafter, MFT

Mr. Hafter has authored the provocative book ‘Growing Balls – Personal Power for Young Men.’ He is a licensed marriage and family therapist with over twenty years of experience working with teenagers, young adults and their families. His presentation will advance the position that communities need to take a stronger role in the mental health of the people living within them, and this includes getting mature mentoring available to young men, not just programs. His strategies to accomplish these objectives will be shared in his presentation.
