7:00 pm · Keynote Address The Resilience Revolution · Larry Brendtro

Traditional approaches to challenging youngsters have been pessimistic – preoccupied by attempts to control deviance and treat pathology. Now, a new positive psychology challenges the fields of education, treatment, and youth development to shift from the deficit model to building strength and resilience. This session draws on The Resilience Revolution (NES, 2006) by Larry Brendtro and Scott Larson. Resilience science is put into practice to develop successful strategies for reaching challenging children and youth by building trust, talent, responsibility, and respect.

Thursday, May 8

8:45 – 10:00 am · Changing the Odds, One School Day at a Time · Mark Katz

For at least some children at risk for serious emotional, behavioral, learning and later life adjustment problems, can simply going to school each day actually protect them from these negative outcomes years down the road? And if so, how can schools, families, health care professionals and others in our community work together to create a school day capable of buffering children and their families in this way? During this presentation we’ll discuss these questions in depth, and show how, by working together, we’re now capable of creating a school experience that not only improves the quality of life of struggling school age children and their families, but also can potentially prevent more serious emotional, behavioral, learning and later life adjustment problems down the road.

As we grapple with the realities of the State’s budget crisis and our voter’s mandate for transformational reform, with the next Presidential election changes will be coming to Washington which will impact health, mental health, children and families.

How do we take the lead on these changes? What do we want to see changed? How will we get there? What can you, as a CMHACY stakeholder, do to make this happen?

Question our experts on what direction is being taken to reform our state and nation.

End of Conference (Lunch is included for people lodging at Asilomar)
